STAY AT HOME IF YOU CAN

First identified in Wuhan, in China last December, the COVID-19 outbreak has been recognised as a pandemic by the WHO on 11 March 2020, after cases were found in over 160 countries. China, Italy, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Germany – soon to be followed by other countries – have enforced nationwide lockdowns in an extreme attempt to contain the spread.

In these moments, when nature barges into our everyday lives with such urgency, we rediscover that we are one people, and nature sees no colour nor ideology, no faith nor wealth.

Keep safe and observe all precautions. Protect yourself. Protect others.

‘τὰ πάντα ῥεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει’
Heraclitus

Regressando a casa, agora, por entre as ondulações
legíveis do fluxo do rio sossegado,
cruzando juncais curvados no azul-turquesa remansado,
panta rhei, desde os portos, revela suas canções

a distância aumenta na água que crepita
distância lacustre – em tua boca reverberou –
hoje o sol brilha como quem grita
rompendo nuvens que ele dissipou

SOGNO by Alina Trifan

Ten years ago, when Alina and her family emigrated to Italy, Moldovan citizens could hardly travel anywhere without a visa. People would not visit other countries, let alone have regular holidays. Visa requirements changed in 2014, and again in May 2018, allowing Moldovans to travel freely.

por juncos sesgados, turquesas poco profundos,
puertos de escala, el Panta Rhei crea

más distancia en las aguas revueltas,
lacustre distancia – dijiste en voz alta –
el sol de hoy ardiendo radiante
atraviesa una mañana de nube densa;

‘τὰ πάντα ῥεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει’
Heraclitus

Turning for home, now, across the calm lake’s
readable ripples and flows
by way of slant reeds, its turquoise shallows
ports of call, the Panta Rhei makes

more distance emerge in its churning water,
lacustrine distance – you said out loud –
today’s sun burning the brighter
come through a morning of banked-up cloud;
